Government guide to Twitter tells ministers they need to get tweeting

Postings on Twitter normally have to be brief — but the first government guide to the micro-blogging service, stretches to 20 pages.

A Department for Business, Innovation and Skills official has produced a generic Twitter strategy for all government departments, despite the risk of “criticism of jumping on the bandwagon” and “pointless content”.

The 20-page document , produced by Neil Williams, BIS's head of corporate digital channels, says that departments can use Twitter to communicate better with the public and it recommends that tweets should be "human and credible".
